Married couples seeking a divorce would have a longer wait before the court makes it final under legislation introduced this week in the Senate.
Senate Bill 5614, sponsored by Sen. Don Benton (R-Vancouver), would extended the divorce waiting period from 90 days to one year.
People seeking divorces would also have to prove they have read and understand a handbook explaining Washington’s divorce law.
Seven Republicans and two Democrats have signed on to the bill, called the “Family Second Chances Act.”
Courts would have the authority to waive the waiting period in certain cases. The bill will receive a hearing in the Senate Committee on Law & Justice at 8 a.m. on Friday.
